Optional Overdraft

Courtesy Pay gives added protection when funds are low

Courtesy Pay is optional overdraft protection that may help cover eligible transactions when there isn’t enough money in your account, giving you added flexibility for checks, automatic payments through ACH, transfers, Bill Pay, ATM, and everyday debit card transactions.1

What to expect when using Courtesy Pay

If Credit Union of Southern California (CU SoCal) pays an eligible transaction through Courtesy Pay (which is not guaranteed in every circumstance), a $29 fee per item will apply. This will result in an overdrawn balance in your account, and you’ll need to bring your account back to a positive balance.

Transactions covered by Courtesy Pay

General Courtesy Pay covers checks, Bill Pay, fund transfers, recurring debit card charges, and automatic ACH payments. If you already have general Courtesy Pay, a separate opt-in is required for Courtesy Pay that covers debit card and ATM transactions.

The advantages of Courtesy Pay

Courtesy Pay offers added peace of mind when your balance is low by helping cover eligible transactions, reducing the possibly of returned checks or declined transactions. Courtesy Pay is optional so it's your choice, and you can opt out at any time.

  • 1 An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway. At CU SoCal, our standard overdraft practice is called Courtesy Pay. Courtesy Pay may help cover eligible transactions when you have insufficient funds, but it is not guaranteed for every transaction. We also offer overdraft protection options, such as linking to a savings account, which may cost less than Courtesy Pay. To learn more, ask us about these options.

Paying an overdraft is done at our discretion, and we do not guarantee that we will authorize and pay every overdraft for checks, automatic bill payments, and other transactions made using your checking account number. We do not authorize and pay overdrafts for ATM transactions and everyday debit card transactions unless you opt in. If you opt in, Courtesy Pay may be available for eligible ATM and everyday debit card transactions. If CU SoCal pays an overdraft, we will charge you a $29 fee for each item paid. There is no limit on the total fees we can charge you for overdrawing your account.

If you do not opt in and we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined. If you want CU SoCal to authorize and pay overdrafts on your ATM and everyday debit card transactions, you can opt in through Digital Banking or contact us at 866.287.6225.
