Last holiday season, Credit Union of Southern California helped alleviate hard times and bring joy to more than 100 local families by gifting more than $15,000 worth of clothes, toys, food, home appliances, and other items.
For its efforts, the Brea-based credit union recently won first-place statewide honors in an annual credit union industry recognition program. The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award program recognizes credit unions for socially responsible community projects. The credit union—honored in the more than $500 million asset category—will now compete at the national level of the competition.
Credit Union of Southern California President and CEO Dave Gunderson is humbled by the recognition.
“CU SoCal believes that there’s a story behind every face. It’s our privilege to get to know that story and to put the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People” into action,” he said. “Our staff is compassionate about serving others and it’s heart-warming to see their commitment to make a positive difference in the community. Our board, management and staff are honored by this award and to have helped those in need during the holiday season.”
The credit union had a goal of helping at least 100 families during the holiday season, raise a minimum of $15,000 to fund the gifting, get the entire staff involved in the event, and add an additional city or school district to the existing groups it has helped in previous years.
Credit union staff worked with various cities and school districts and held various fundraising activities throughout the year. In the end, each goal was met. El Monte was added to the list of target areas, which also included Whittier, La Habra, and Pico Rivera. The credit union received 130 requests for assistance—of those 23 families were selected to be included in the holiday gift event and the other 107 were sent a letter and gift cards for the entire family.
The awards program is administered at the state level by the California Credit Union League, the state trade association for credit unions in California and Nevada, and nationally by the Credit Union National Association. Entries were submitted to the League and judged by a committee from the Arizona Credit Union League. First-place winners advance to the national competition.
