Whittier, CA—On Saturday, April 28, 2012, Credit Union of Southern California (CU SoCal) helped hundreds of Los Angeles and Orange County residents guard their identities by safely disposing of their confidential documents at its third annual Free Community Shred-A-Thon.
The community credit union hosted mobile shredding trucks at its Brea and Whittier branches where attendees had up to three boxes of paper documents shredded free of charge. Visitors dropped off their confidential documents via drive-thru service or parked and watched as their documents were destroyed by licensed document destruction specialists.“We felt that this would be a great way to increase awareness of identity theft, and allow people to dispose of documents containing personally identifying information that, if discarded improperly, could open the door to identity theft,” stated Michelle Hunter, CU SoCal’s SVP of Marketing and Development. “Our mission is to build better lives and to add value to our communities. Each year, we hope to help make our communities safer through this event by providing individuals the opportunity to have their confidential documents destroyed on site, free of charge.”
The mobile shredding trucks ran simultaneously at each location from 9 a.m. till noon and were filled with more than three tons of paper documents. The destroyed confidential documents will be recycled into new paper products.
