Rewards Checking FAQs

Account FAQs

CU SoCal Members who are at least 18 years of age with accounts in good standing are eligible to open a CU SoCal Rewards Checking Account. At this time, businesses are ineligible to open a CU SoCal Rewards Checking Account.
If you currently have a CU SoCal Checking Account and meet the qualifications, you do not need to sign up for Rewards Checking. We will automatically upgrade your account for you on July 1, 2018. The transition for current account holders will be seamless: account numbers will stay the same; PINs will be the same; checks will continue to work; debit cards will continue to work; and automatic payments and direct deposits will continue without interruption.

If you do not currently have a CU SoCal Checking Account and meet the qualifications, you can open an account by calling our Member Care Center at 866.287.6225 Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
Beginning July 1, 2018, CU SoCal will only offer two checking account types: Rewards and Classic. All previous account types will be expired and automatically transitioned into one of those account types. Information has been sent to all current checking account holders with information about this transition.
Through the strength and size of our Membership, we are able to provide all of the benefits of this account for a nominal $5 monthly fee—a small fraction of the cost most banks' charge for a basic checking account. Due to hard costs and administrative costs associated with the service of this account, we need to recoup these costs as prudent stewards of all our Members' money.
Yes, the account will pay a monthly dividend on average account balances at the end of each month. Account holders will receive one of two dividend rates based on the total number of debit card purchases made during the month. Account holders who make a minimum of 10 debit card purchases during the month will receive a bonus dividend rate. Account holders who make less than 10 debit card purchases during the month will receive the standard dividend rate.
