Information about Regulation D

CU SoCal Members can make withdrawals and/or transfer funds between accounts. Regulation D, a federal law that applies to all federally-insured financial institutions, limits certain withdrawals or transfers on non-transaction accounts (Savings and Money Market) to a maximum of six (6) per month. Three of these six can be third party (point of sale or check card transactions).

Automatic overdraft protection from a Line of Credit is not subject to this regulation. And, Regulation D does not apply to Checking accounts.  Please see the chart below for Regulation D limitations.

Limit of six (6) transactions per month:                  Limit of three (3) transactions per month:
The six transactions may come from any combination   Third Party transactions
of the three transactions listed to the right plus the
transactions listed below (not to exceed a total of six).

> PhoneTeller/CU OnLine                                         > Overdraft transfers to cover POS, ATM and
 > Telephone Service Center transfers                            Visa Check Card transactions
 > Electronic debits (ACH/EFT)                                  > Checks to a third party (Money Market)
 > Overdraft transfers to cover checks                       > POS transactions from Savings or Money

 Unlimited transactions:                                                Market
 > ATM transactions
 > In-person branch transactions
    (transfers or loan payments)
 > Credit union checks sent to account holder
 > Mail requests (transfers or loan payments)

Here are some tips to help you manage your non-transaction accounts and avoid Regulation D limits:

Within your Checking account:

  • Make one large transfer instead of several small transfers. Each transfer (made by calling the Telephone Center, PhoneTeller or using CU OnLine) counts as one transaction.
  • Keep sufficient balances in your checking account to avoid overdrafts. Every overdraft made from your savings account into your checking account counts as one transaction. You're only allowed six overdrafts to cover checks and three to cover POS and Visa Check Card transactions. After you reach the limit, you may be subject to non-sufficient funds or courtesy pay fees.
  • Setup ACH automatic debits with merchants or service providers to come out of your checking account instead of your savings account. Checking accounts are not subject to Regulation D.

Line of Credit transfers:

  • Apply for a CU SoCal overdraft protection Line of Credit. Regulation D transfer limits do not apply.

ATM transfers:

  • Perform transfers at an ATM or in person at one of our branch locations.
